The average online PhD costs $28,000 per year, according to a new study from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, shows that those who complete a two-year online degree program, which usually costs $42,000 annually, will need to work more than 10 years before earning their Ph.d.
The average salary of an online Phd student is about $42.6 million, according the study.
The CIHR study did not provide a breakdown of the cost of an in-person doctorate program.
“If the average cost of a program like this is $42 million per year for two years, we would expect to see many students who are eligible for an online degree and who have completed the program graduate in four years,” said Dr. Yana Krieg, the lead author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
Krieg’s study analyzed data from Ontario and the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia.
In a statement to CBC News, CIHR said it had not yet been able to access the data in its entirety.
The study does not show how many of the online students have done postdoctoral work.
“The study does show that postdoctoral students who have complete online programs do not need to complete more than two years of postdoctoral training before earning an online doctorate,” said Krieg.
“Students with no formal training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or who have no particular interest in research, may have access to an online program for which there is no prerequisites.”
The study says that, compared to traditional doctorates, a degree with an online component is more likely to pay for itself.
It says students who complete an online postgraduate program earn more than those who do not.
For example, the study says an online doctoral program with a $40,000 cost for a two year degree would have an expected annual return of $1,721 over the first 10 years, compared with $1.5 million for a traditional degree.
The researchers suggest that universities could start to use data to identify students who need to take additional courses or study abroad to earn their Ph ds.
Kreyg said that data could also be used to identify graduates with low-paying jobs.
“One way to do that is to provide information about the people in the workforce who need help,” Krieg said.
“We can identify who have been in this position, and we can identify where they can get help.”
The CI HR study is the latest to examine the online PhD program, with many other studies exploring the costs and benefits of the new approach.
The most recent study looked at the costs of an undergraduate program in the U.S., Canada, the U-K., Australia, Japan and South Korea.
It also looked at costs in France and the U.-K.
Kritikos says that the CIHR analysis shows that online Ph d programs are likely to be more cost-effective than traditional doctorate programs.
The cost of the Ph. d program is lower, Kritis said, because students who take online courses will be able to complete their degrees online and pay lower tuition fees.
The costs of attending an online university is lower as well, as the students are expected to complete a bachelor’s degree, which will cost them about $1 million.
A traditional doctor, on the other hand, typically costs about $35,000.
Kriegs study suggests that an online bachelor’s program could also have an advantage over traditional degrees because it could give students an edge in the job market.
The online Phds are expected be more competitive in the hiring market because of their flexible schedule and lower tuition costs, Krieg said.
In Canada, employers are looking for people with expertise in technology and the web.
That could be a huge asset in the tech and internet space, Krieg added.
In her study, Kreygs says the online PhDs could help boost the Canadian economy by making sure Canadian companies can access top talent and attract more international talent.
“It’s really a win-win for everyone,” KrieGs said.
The Canadian Institutes for Health Research says that more research is needed into how the cost and quality of Phd programs compares with traditional programs, such as doctorates and doctoral degrees.
The institute is working with universities, industry, governments and industry groups to identify ways to improve the online doctor program.
