A new school bus system has begun in New York City, and parents have been eager to share their kids’ stories about how they got to school again.
The new system, which was rolled out in late September, has been embraced by parents who are upset that the system doesn’t have dedicated seating for the handicapped and seniors, but parents who have tried the bus service and liked it said the benefits outweighed any potential negatives.
The system includes handicapped accessible seating, including in front of a designated waiting area for handicapped students and seniors.
The new system is being rolled out across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York.
“I have two daughters,” said Michelle DellaSala, a parent who has two children in special needs.
“I thought we should get our children off the bus, but when we got back, they were not on the bus.”
The system offers handicapped parents the option to purchase their children a new school day, but many parents are still waiting for the first buses to arrive.
“I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t frustrated,” said mother Rachel Wahlstrom, who has a special-needs son.
“We are not going to have our children sitting in our seats, and we have a disability.
We’re really frustrated.
It’s not the best system in the world, and it doesn’t make sense.”
She added that the bus system was not a perfect solution to a lot of problems.
Wahlstrom said that many families in her situation are waiting for buses to leave the city’s suburbs, because of the long commute times and long wait times at bus stops.
“We have to travel a long way to get home,” she said.
“That’s the biggest problem.
We can’t just leave it up to the buses to pick up the kids.”
Wahlbaum said that when her son got to kindergarten, his bus stopped for a long time.
“If we were able to get on the school bus, we would have been able to go home,” said Wahlbaum.
“They don’t have enough seats for everybody,” said parent Jessica Gannon.
“When I told my husband, he said, ‘Oh, you have to do it yourself.'”
Gannon said that she had been frustrated about the delays that were occurring for years.
She said that the new bus system makes things easier for parents, who have to make decisions about where their children should be seated, when, and how often.
“It’s a new experience, but it’s an important experience,” said Gannon, who had two kids who were placed on the same bus with their father.
Gannon’s husband said he also thought the new system was better than the older system.
“When we were doing the old system, we had to be extra careful because of who was on the buses,” he said.
“But we know what we’re doing is better.”
The bus system also has the benefit of making it easier for some parents to get around, and there is some hope that the first few buses will be arriving in the New York area in the next few days.
“This is just a great start, but we know there’s a lot more to do,” said teacher Barbara Felt, who is currently working on her first year teaching in New Brunswick, New Brunswick.
Felt said that a lot has been accomplished with the system, and that she hopes that it will improve in the coming months.
“Hopefully we will have buses all over New York by the end of the year,” she added.
“Our goal is to have a full service system.”
In the meantime, parents are continuing to voice their concerns about the new buses, saying that the buses are not accessible.
Parents and children have been voicing their frustrations with the new school system, as well.
For example, parent Amy Bostrom said that her family is concerned about the cost of bus transportation and that the city has not provided enough resources to get the buses into their community.
Bostrom is concerned that the New Jersey system is not wheelchair accessible.
“At least in my home state of New Jersey we have an accessible bus system that works,” she told ABC News.
“The buses are accessible for all people.
There is no handicap or age restriction.
There’s no handicapped seat, there is no disabled seat.
It is a wheelchair accessible system.”
Bostroms children also have special needs, and she said that even though the new systems are accessible, she worries that some parents are not making accommodations for her kids.
“What we’re hearing is that the schools are just not going over the top,” she continued.
It takes time for the buses.”ABC News’ Michael Johnson contributed to this report.
